Check it out, y’all. Here at CrossFit Alexandria many of us subscribe to the “Paleo diet”. We’ve spent a good bit of time reading, researching, learning, questioning, eating strange new foods and not eating old favorites. But why? What’s the draw? If you read the Paleo for Dummies – Part 1 blog post by Janelle Lee on July 20, you would know Paleo is for anyone and everyone and we lead the lifestyle in order to be fitter, stronger, healthier, and to improve our overall quality of life. Just like Janelle said – “enough said.” Why would you want anything less for yourself or your family? But there’s another level to Paleo I know you’ve heard others talking about. Maybe you even investigated yourself and considered it but shied away from it. Maybe you attempted it, wanted to try it, but needed the encouragement from, and accountability to, others. I’m talking about completing 30 days of 100% clean, real food only eating by following the Whole30 program as written by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig at Whole9 Life.
Why do a Whole30? Dallas and Melissa say it’s for your own good and will change your life. It’s definitely a learning experience, a pretty cool journey through the highs and lows, the ups and downs of having sugar cravings, but then discovering the true sweetness of fresh, real, no sugar added fruit; the overwhelming desire for a big bowl of pasta or rice and gravy, or something fried, but then discovering you feel less bloated, have less gas, have more energy. The Whole30 is about discovering real food – food not so processed and preserved it will keep in your pantry until the next millennium and so over-the-top flavor enhanced the list of chemicals, sugar, and soy added is longer than the real food listed on the label - if indeed there’s any real food listed at all… The Whole30 is liberating, maddening, exhilarating, frustrating, energizing and exhausting all at once, but at the end, when it’s less and less frustrating and exhausting, you don’t know how you’ve ever eaten any other way. When you do start to partake of the “banned substances” as my husband refers to them, you’ll be awed by how unhealthy you feel.
So, you wanna try a Whole30 with me and others here and around the world? Thirty days of pure, simple, clean, fresh delicious food? There’s a CFA accountability sign-up sheet on the white board. The Whole30 forum and Facebook page are terrific resources for finding the answers to just about any question you have. If you can’t find the answer – post the question yourself. Ask others at CFA. Discover a whole new level of Paleo nutrition, a whole new level of fitness and strength, a whole new level of quality of life.
